Virginia Esther Hamilton fue una autora bestseller y ganadora de premios en ficción young adult y children's. Nació en Yellow Springs, Ohio, en 1934, y se crió en una gran familia extendida con un rico patrimonio cultural. Su abuelo fue traído a Ohio a través del Ferrocarril Subterráneo, lo que jugó un papel significativo en la configuración de su identidad y escritura.
Hamilton recibió una beca completa para asistir al Antioch College en Yellow Springs y más tarde se transfirió a la Ohio State University en Columbus, donde estudió literatura y redacción creativa.
