Joan Aiken fue una reconocida autora inglesa, nacida el 4 de septiembre de 1924 en Rye, Sussex. Provenía de una familia con fuertes vínculos literarios, incluyendo a su padre, Conrad Aiken, un poeta estadounidense ganador del Premio Pulitzer, y a su hermana, Jane Aiken Hodge, también escritora. Su madre, Jessie MacDonald, era graduada de la Maestría en Radcliffe College, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Aiken fue ampliamente reconocida por sus contribuciones a la literatura infantil, fantasía y géneros de thriller.
