Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger, más conocido por su seudónimo Cordwainer Smith, fue un autor de ciencia ficción influyente y talentoso. Nació en Milwaukee, Wisconsin, el 11 de julio de 1913. Aunque Linebarger es bien conocido por su obra de ciencia ficción, también tuvo una carrera variada como oficial del Ejército de los EE. UU., erudito distinguido en el Este de Asia y experto en guerra psicológica.
A pesar de las demandas de sus otras carreras, Linebarger logró establecerse como un escritor de ciencia ficción destacado.
